Japan Night at SXSW!

By far one of the coolest things I came across at SXSW was Japan Night at Elysium on Red River. Andrew Bailie and I wandered around for quite a while looking for free beer and descent music–both of which proved hard to come by–and after some overpriced falafel and aimless wandering I finally got a text from Lauren Pascale telling me to come over to Japan Night…and to get there quick.
The security at the Elysium was tough and I had my camera in my bag. I pulled the old ‘someone-must-have-stolen-my-press-pass-from-my-camera’ trick and was let through with very little hassle. Matt Arbeiter and his Monster drink weren’t so lucky.
I missed most of the bands and only got my camera out for Dolly (last band of the night), but it was definitely a treat.
The bands were tight, completely different from anything we’d seen so far, and very, very loud.

Check out some of my favorite pics!

Check out more about Dolly on their official MySpace page.

Video is Up!!

I finally posted a link to the short-cut of the It’s True documentary to my other page. Check it out at here.
Just shot a set with the Mynabirds and I’m on my way to meet up with Lauren Pascale and Chris Rivera to talk with them about their SXSW experience. I REALLY hope I’ll have some interviews posted soon.
Day one of the festival was great! I think Karl summed it up pretty well: “Austin, Day one: played the parking game…might have sideswiped a car…but not exactly sure. Found our venue…drank some free Boulevard…played a show…drank some more free Boulevard. Wandered around…ended up at Saddle Creek showcase. Adam made some new friends? Hit the hotel at a rather early 1:30am. Pretty tame day, really. Today should be better.” I woke up in a hotel bed with Andrew Bailie and a smile on my face. What could be better?
The rest of my plans for the day include interviews with Laura Burhenn, Brad Hoshaw, Thunder Power, and watching It’s True burn the house down at their official showcase. BD Riley’s on 6th street at 7pm!!!

Good News for It’s True!

Well, well, well, check out #34 on NPR’s The Austin 100: A SXSW Mix for 2010.
Karl, “Not bad for a bunch of nerds!”
While I agree that it’s great that they’re on the list, I can’t help but notice that the “I” at the beginning of their name might have something to do with their #34 ranking…
Still, well done.

Visiting Lights

Thanks for checking out the new blog.  I’m headed down to SXSW with It’s True on Wednesday and it seemed appropriate to have some kind of outlet for all of my SXSW-related news, sightings, and shenanigans.  This blog will be my little diary from the road and I’ll try to update fairly regularly with pictures and video.
